Young Life is a Christian Ministry that reaches out to middle school, high school and college-aged kids. Volunteer adult leaders give their time to reach out to kids who may need a friend, guidance and to be someone who can answer the hard questions.

Young Life holds a huge place in my heart. I started going to Young Life in middle school shortly after my brother passed away. Having my Young Life leaders to confide in truly changed my life in every way and made me the person I am today. They were there to answer every hard question I had and helped me get through some of the hardest years of my life. My Young Life leaders are still a part of my life and always one of the first people I reach out to when I need guidance.

DJ and I love Young Life’s Mission. DJ lived in Nepal working with Young Life and reaching out to kids, we got engaged at Castaway Camp, and we lived on a Young Life camp in Oregon working on property staff for our first year of marriage. Young Life has changed our lives in so many ways we love being able to help change the lives of kids and young adults.

Adult leaders bring kids on a week-long adventure where they will enjoy activities like rock climbing, zip lining, outdoor games and listening to a camp speaker share a life-changing message.

When you purchase one of our Young Life CAMPing Mugs, part of the proceeds will go to helping kids who cannot afford the full cost of camp.

This year campers will be headed to Castaway Camp near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota for the best week of their lives!

We asked Dan Eastgate, the Young Life Area Director for Bismarck-Mandan a few questions.

Q:What is the best part about Castaway Young Life Camp?

Dan: It sounds cliché but Castaway has too many "best parts" to name just one.  Of course all of the adventure everyone gets to experience: parasailing, scaling the climbing wall, sailing a HobieCat, and zip lining 900 feet into Pelican Lake!  Playing a round of Frisbee golf, eating ice cream at the "Seabreeze", hanging in the hot tub and laying around in a hammock.  Going to camp with your oldest friends, and meeting new friends from your own school and from other communities across the US.  Lastly, 400 plus kids trying to literally rip the doors off to rush into club with all their friends to take part in a huge, hour long "party with a purpose!" simply called Club. Once inside Club, kids will laugh harder, sing (SCREAM) songs louder, and get to hear the most amazing love story ever told...Jesus' love for all of them.

And of course we can't talk about Castaway without mentioning the legendary BIG COOKIE!

Q:How many kids will be going to camp this year from Bismarck-Mandan?

Dan: Between, Young Life, WyldLife (middle school), and YoungLives (YL ministry to teen moms) we are hoping and praying for 70-80 teens to attend Castaway with us this summer.

Q: When kids get back from camp, what is one thing they talk about the most?

Dan: Kids repeatedly say Young Life camp is one of the best week's of their life! The week at camp kids are free to be kids.  They have more fun than ever, make better and deeper friendships, and are given a chance to consider for themselves God, life, and their place in the world.  Every year on the bus ride home we hear kids saying "I love this place and I want to go back!”

Q: Along with purchasing a CAMPing Mug, how could someone help a kid get to camp this summer?

Dan: Bismarck-Mandan YL will never allow finances to stop a teenager from attending Young Life camp.  We faithfully fundraise and are looking for generous donors to help us provide "Camperships" for kids in need.  No way around it, YL camp has a cost, but the experience is priceless.

Q: Describe Young Life summer camp in one sentence.

Dan: Better experienced than explained. Get on the bus!

Q: If someone wants to get involved with Young Life, what is the best way to do that?

Dan:  Go to YL club, go to YL camp, bring a friend, trust us it'll be fun. Follow @bismanyl on Instagram to find out all the goings on, or go old school and call Area Director Dan Eastgate at701-220-6878

Small Business, Big Dreams

Photo Credit: Hailey Whitman There is a difference between twisting your dreams and trusting your dreams. Twisting your dreams and trying to make it go one way or another, to make it fit in this box of comfort and ease. To have 1 + 1 always equal 2 and to know that the lovely number of X will be in your bank account on the 25th of every month. (Cue the palm trees and sunny beach). Trusting your dreams looks a little different. Trusting in your discomfort and flying by the seat of your pants. Looking at the problem and not quite understanding how 1 + 1 equals 7, because it just doesn’t make sense. Trusting your dreams feels a lot like setting out on your kayak without knowing where your paddle is. It might be on the boat. Or under the boat. Or on your friends boat next to you. Or maybe it’s at home in the garage… We love our kayaks. Life in the kayak with a the paddle in hand is good. It’s really good. Want to make the boat go right? Dig your left side in. Want to stop moving for a moment? Paddle to the shore 20 feet ahead. Take a load off, stay awhile. Life in a kayak without quite knowing where your paddle is can be scary at times. But it can also be really fun. It’s in the moments of getting creative with how to keep moving forward. It’s in the moments of asking your friends next to you if they see it. It’s in the moments when your boat turned backwards, yet somehow you’re still moving forward. We have never been in this kayak. But we are trusting we are going to love the journey. Learning from our mistakes, finding our paddle, losing our paddle, finding our paddle again. Sometimes we might land on shore. Other times we will have to ask a friend if they see our paddle. Or if we can borrow theirs. That’s the trusting of it. The adventure of it. We are so excited to announce that we are officially co-owners of Mighty Missouri Coffee Company’s store front. We couldn’t ask for a better business partner than Brian Jackson. Brian is the kind of guy who you can send and out-of-no-where email to filled with your dreams and visions and his first answer will be, “How can I help?” We know. We did it. Mighty Missouri Coffee Company is more than just coffee and good food. We love the stage that the coffee world sets. It allows us to pursue our biggest passion: people. When you pursue people, when you experience life together, when you have that life changing conversation that involves two cups of coffee in between you…the coffee is a big plus. But it’s the person across the table from you, that’s what this life is all about. How sweet it is to see our dreams becoming a reality. It is such an honor to be on this journey with you. You are not just our customers, we deeply want you to know that you’re our friends. We wouldn’t be here without you. Cheers, JamieLee + DJ Kramer

Coffee + Community is our Dream

Brian Jackson

I remember sitting in my high school classroom, doodling about what I wanted my future coffee shop to look like. Drawing the tables, the counters, the whole layout…it became a bit of an obsession really. I carried that dream with me into college while I earned a degree in Mass Communications, further developing my love for planning events, surrounding myself with creative and passionate people, learning the importance of community and falling in love with my now husband, DJ Kramer.

DJ and I learned early in our relationship that we had a similar passion for operating a small business. While in Business school he designed a small business plan that he often dreamed of and was so excited about, he contemplated dropping out of college to pursue it.

Our love for coffee and the coffee community grows daily with everything we learn, everything we experience. In college, you could often find us in the corner of our favorite coffee shops. While living in Oregon we developed a love for fresh roasted coffee. Every time we travel, we make it a point to try a new coffee house and see what kind of beans they are filling their cups with. We love every aspect of the coffee world, and we are so excited to pursue it daily.

Our love of community, coffee and adventure collided into this huge dream that we could never stop talking about. Every life decision we made, one of our first thoughts would always be, “How will that help us open a coffee shop one day?”

Sitting in the corner of a quaint coffee shop in Oregon last July, DJ and I were going over an email draft we were about to send to some guy named Brian Jackson. We knew the email was going to be a little random and we didn’t quite know what to say. We shared our vision, tried to put our passions in to words, said a little prayer and hit send.

Brian was quick to get back to us and we started the conversation about what it might look like for us to partner together to bring all of our dreams to life.

Fast forward to the present, the night before our shops soft opening, Brian pulls up the email we sent him. We laughed about how strange it sounded going back into that moment, not knowing each other to how our friendship has grown and how our dreams have been changing into a reality. We all laughed in amazement when we realized that the email we sent was exactly a year ago to the date we opened the shop. DJ and I laughed about how we came back with the mindset, “we will pursue this dream with all we have for a year.” God’s funny that way. All the confusion, excitement, tears, joys and conversations that have been had are just the beginning of something big. We are so excited to see what is in store!

DJ and I have a deep love for people. We want the Mighty Missouri Coffee Company storefront to be a place where all people feel welcomed and loved, as if you’re stepping into a loved one’s home.

Every conversation you have with someone, we believe you leave that conversation changed. Our best conversations have included two cups of coffee in between. There is something so sacred about being intentional in the daily routines. We would be honored to be one of the first people you see to start the day, putting that great cup of coffee in your hand, telling you to have a good day, and truly looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Cheers,

JamieLee & DJ Kramer
